Chapter 5 –Aiming For The Presidency

2000 Presidential Candidacy

In 1999, Bush announced his candidacy for President of the United States. He was one among many candidates for the Republican Party presidential nomination. He had described himself as “compassionate conservative,” believing that he could be financially conservative in government but still help those in need.

During his campaign, he made known his plans to increase the size of the United States Armed forces, improve education, cut taxes and help the minorities. By 2000, it was just Bush and McCain. But it was clear that George had a lot going for him. During his fund-raising, he had received $75 million for his campaign. Many Republicans viewed him as the person who could once again pull the party together.

People liked Bush because he was energetic and he liked being with people. He set about making a change in the impression that the Republicans were the “mean” party. He was friendly and unpretentious and many voters, not just Republicans, liked him.

George W. Bush won the primary election against Senator John McCain. In the Democratic primary elections, Vice President Al Gore won. And so the race for president in 2000 would be between George W. Bush and Al Gore.

Gore proved to be a tough opponent, having served in national government for more than 20 years. He had his eyes on the presidential seat for a long time. He studied to make himself an expert on many issues such as international trade. On the other hand, Bush had only one public office, that of governor of Texas. And he surrounded himself with knowledgeable people to keep him well informed on important issues.

In 2000, George W. announced that Dick Cheyney, who had been a congressman from Wyoming and as secretary of defense for President George H. W. Bush, would be his running mate. They campaigned across the country and promoted their platforms.

In November, results came in and showed that Bush won 29 states. He won the election with 271 electoral votes to Gore’s 266. George W. Bush was sworn in as president on January 20, 2001.
